EVE online ships to 3D Studio

A short tutorial on exporting EVE Online ships into 3D Studio for use in other works.

You will need:
TriExporter
3D Studio Max

  1. EXPORTING:
    TriExporter should be downloaded, installed, and ‘Set EVE folder’ set.
    Open TriExporter and browse to the model you’d like to use, for example /res/dx9/model/ship/caldari/cb3.
    Select the folder cb3 and from the ‘File’ menu, ‘Extract File/Directory’ and select a destination.
    Select the largest (best quality) .gr2 file then, from the ‘File’ menu select ‘Export Tri-Model’ and save as type .3DS.
  2. IMPORTING:
    Open 3DS Max. Hit ‘Import’, set the file type to 3DS Max and select the cbshape3.3ds file created in the previous step.
  3. FIXING ORIENTATION:
    Select the model, then from the ‘edit’ drop down, select ‘Rotate’ and enter ’90′ in the X rotation field at the bottom.
  4. MATERIALS:
    With the model still selected, from the ‘Rendering’ drop down, select ‘Material Editor’, then ’Compact Material Editor’. Select the first material –  ’01 – Default’.
    Switch the material to ‘metal’, and then set the Ambient/Diffuse colour to black.
    Click the little box to the right of the Diffuse section within Metal Basic Parameters.
    Select ‘bitmap’ from the ‘Material/Map Browser’.

    Browse to and select the  cb3_d.dds file exported in a previous step.
    Maps need flipping, under ‘Angle’ in the ‘coordinates section’, change ‘U’ to ’180′.

    Select the primary material and apply it to the model.
  5. RENDERING:
    Hit ‘F9′ to render….
